Thoughts: Isaiah Washington

Posted in Thoughts of Grey by El Guru on June 20, 2007

In the past couple days there has been lots of new news in regards to the firing of Isaiah Washington (Preston Burke) from Grey’s Anatomy. Recently. Jasmyne Cannick a gay/lesbian activist is circulating a petition urging ABC to bring Washington back to the show claiming the firing (along with other minority cast members from other shows) was racially motivated. Now breaking his silence since being fired, Washington is in disbelief on how ‘calm and collected’ Rhimes was when she called to fire him.

First off, I don’t see his firing being racially motivated. Yes, he did make homophobic remark about castmate T.R. Knight (George O’Malley) last October. While that was uncalled for and definitely inappropriate, I doubt that is what got him fired. No, it was his behavior at the Golden Globes press room this past January that did him in. According to T.R. Knight, Washington grabbed a microphone and announced (using the ‘f-word’) that he had never used that term [hollywood.com].

Washington and others just doesn’t seem to grasp the concept that there is going to be negative repercussions as a result of that type of behavior. Further these repercussions are going to be the same regardless of race. Everyone might have been willing to let the October incident slide. Jasmyne Cannick says in her petition “Washington has since apologized and go onto to perform community service by way of a Public Service Announcement for the very organizations that have been orchestrating his dismissal.” Now I am not sure if that was before or after the ‘repeat performance’ at the Golden Globes.

I am sure Washington was told/warned in October if he pulled something like that again he would be fired. After all, that is not the type of image the show wants to promote. So why was Washington so surprised at ‘how calm and collected Rhimes was when she called to fire him’? Personally, I see no reason why Rhimes wouldn’t be ‘calm and collected’ after all they both should have known what was coming.  May be if Washington hadn’t specifically said the ‘f-word’ at the Golden Globes this past January he would still have job today on Grey’s.

C’mon… George O’malley is gone from the show for now and who knows maybe forever… whatever happened that made Dr. Burke go, can be forgotten now. He can atleast be brought back to the show in case George is not brought back from the dead!
This would make the show much more Mc-twisty and Mc-interesting! All the tension due to Dr. Burke coming back with Christina-Hunt going out and Christina all cardio-deprived and missing Burke… Its gona b amazing to see him back!
Atleast to promote the interest of grey’s loyal fans over years now, Rhymes should consider bringing him back… If not for him, at least for the fans…
