Re-cap..April 19, Time after Time

Posted in Recaps by El Guru on April 21, 2007

I am in a state of total awe.  Shonda Rhimes has pulled together a Staff of Writers and Actors that are ..in my words phenomenal.

The voice-over done by Meredith.  HOW true are those words?   History!!!!  We all have one.  We might not want to remember it, we might not want to share it, we might even want to change it.  YET it is there.

Like:  Ava aka Jane Doe,  we all, all of us deep within want to belong to someone, to something.  How sad to think that her family had found her, only to be rejected and then Alex…oh my.   Will be interesting to see how he handles all the tongue lashing she dealt him and how much truth were in the words that Addison shared with him…”creating the perfect woman?”

Meredith & Derek, where oh where,  is their relationship headed?  One can only hope after ALL they have been through that they will weather these rough waters now.

Susan, aka Mrs. Thatcher Grey aka Mer’s fake Mommy…how amazingly honest she was and so poignant with Meredith.  I can only hope she is around for a while longer.  Meredith needs that kind of role model in her life.   Cristina and her “pretty, pretty hands”  how funny to see her wear nail polish.  She sure told Colin Marlowe what to do and where to go …finally.  Whew.  He was getting a bit stalkish.   Dr. Burke loves Cristina for who she is, I believe and embellishes her faults as well as her intelligence.

The Chief  having Mark Sloan,  of all people as his ‘wingman’.  HA!  But then Mark does know the tactics of flirting better than anyone.  Dancing with Addison, the Chief can move when he needs too..heheeee.  His very first time being at Joe’s …I was impressed at how well he handled himself.  Yea for the Chief.

Callie has to know that her marriage isn’t a marriage, don’t you think?  It happened so suddenly and she is always second when it comes to Meredith or Izzie.  Always.

I loved the scene when George demanded to know where Izzie was…I thought Dr. Bailey would slap him upside his head…LOL.  Then he waltzes into the procedure room and tells Bailey he has it…okay.  George sure got brave didn’t he?  Good for him.  I am not for marriages dissolving, but am not for marriages happening that shouldn’t either and him and Callie?  Well in my honest opinion they shouldn’t have married.

Time after Time, our history catches us and then we have the choice to embrace it and move on.  Izzie, she saw her Daughter, gave her a gift again and now can move on.  Again.

Meredith learns the truth that Susan didn’t encourage her Dad to be involved with her life and yet she accepts the kindness Susan is offering.

This show just gets better and better I think.  The layers of emotions that are given us to peel back and even reflect of our own lives.  I read it at the Writers Blog, “We all have a Mother.”  How true is that.   Izzie, her Daughter is there and she once again gets to give her life.  And she had her best friend with her, George.

Remember in the beginning of the show where Izzie says to George, “It is almost like a Do-Over”….I believe we have Do-Overs.   Time after Time.

IW pulls himself out of Emmy race

Grey’s Anatomy:

Isaiah Washington pulls himself out of Emmy race

April 20, 2007

Isaiah WashingtonIsaiah Washington has been embroiled in controversy for months. Ever since Washington (who plays Dr. Preston Burke on Grey’s Anatomy) shouted a homophobic slur at castmate T.R. Knight, he’s been caught in a maelstrom of bad publicity. Knight, as a result, was forced to officially come out of the closet, a poor choice of words at the Golden Globes caused a rift in the cast, and Washington has remained on shaky ground throughout.

So, what’s the best way to climb out of the abyss of negative media coverage? Baby steps. It was recently announced that Washington will be the only member of the Grey’s Anatomy cast to not submit himself for Emmy consideration. This is the sort of selfless gesture that Washington needs to start winning back fans. However, is it really a show of good faith, or is it an empty gesture?

Would Isaiah have been considered for an Emmy award if he had thrown his hat into the ring? I don’t know. He’s quite good as Preston Burke, playing him very intense and introspective. It’s a unique portrayal, but the degree of difficulty seems low. Then again, I’m not an actor and can’t really comment on how hard a certain role is for an actor, but that’s just my feeling on Washington. So, I wouldn’t give him my Emmy vote if I had one.

There have been questions on whether or not Isaiah will keep his job on Grey’s for the long term, but that talk is mostly of the speculative gossip variety. For a show like Grey’s Anatomy, losing a character like Preston Burke would have a ripple effect on the entire cast and, unless an actor is completely unbearable, you normally won’t fire someone just because you don’t like them.

In terms of nominations, Patrick Dempsey will likely get an Emmy nomination in the Lead Actor category, and I’m betting either Chandra Wilson or Katherine Heigl (or both!) will get a supporting nod. Other than that, I wouldn’t expect anything more on the acting side of things for Grey’s.

Tour of Grey’s Anatomy Set

A highlight of this last trip to LA was visiting my friend Scott on the set of Grey’s Anatomy. Scott loves his job and is very passionate about the show. He is also a writer and has ambitions to have his own TV show one day. It was fun to walk around the set and get a feel for the process of creating the show, especially in postproduction. As it happens all the stars and producers were gathered to read through a script for a new episode when I got there. Did any of them make it on camera? You have to watch to find out. Be warned this is an extensive tour and a large video file. Pause it and give it a minute to load before playing. Sorry about the occasional wind noise – I fired my audio guy.

Kate Walsh….

Posted in Addison Montgomery, Grey's Characters, Private Practice, Spoilers by iluvgreys on April 13, 2007

April 11, 2007More information has arrived concerning the highly anticipated pre-finale Grey’s Anatomy episode ‘Desire’.  This episode is supposed to more or less set up the events of the finale / spin off pilot that will find Dr. Addison (Kate Walsh) headed for a ’simpler’ life. When the Grey’s Anatomy finale airs, we’ll not only meet those characters, but get closure on what personal trauma it is that drives Addison away for good.  Read on for the Grey’s Anatomy spoilers!
According to Ausiello at TVGuide,  early reports that the Alex / Addison romance would chill pending Addison’s impending departure are completely off the mark.  In fact, while it might make sense to throw some water on those flames since it can’t possibly go anywhere, the Grey’s Anatomy writers are taking a stab at actually integrating the Addison / Alex hook up into the impetus for Addison’s exit!

I can’t see this, honestly.  I’ve always been annoyed by the Addison / Alex thing personally.  it isn’t one of the more dynamic pairings and it is so rooted in Alex’s narcissicism and shallowness that its just totally painful to watch.  Particularly if your a dude.  On the other hand, Alex and Jane Doe, that holds promise for redemption.

Despite whether I, you, or anybody else thinks it is worthwhile pursuing the Addison / Alex relationship as a segue into Addison’s search for a calmer, more purposeful life, doesn’t matter one bit because that is the way it is going to be.  Let me turn the mic over to Mr. Ausiello for the whole story:

Remember how I told you that Grey’s decided to put the brakes on Addisex due to Kate Walsh’s impending spin-off-fueled exit from the show? Well, it appears either Shonda Rhimes had a change of heart or I was given some lousy intel, because the two of them are definitely doing the horizontal tango before she leaves for Los Angeles. In fact, I hear it’s their little affair that ultimately leads her to flee Seattle. Also not helping matters: McSteamy’s “failure” to stick to his 60-day vow of chastity. Why’d I put failure in quotes, you ask? ‘Cause there’s a twist (and a surprising one at that)!

I swear to god if the “failure” thing has anything at all resembling a need for Viagra, or worse yet, desensitization creams, I’m chalking this up as the worst character transition in history.

MeeVee Exclusive/Interview with Chandra Wilson

MeeVee Exclusive! Interview with Grey’s Anatomy Star Chandra Wilson

107140_d_1899_prewsedrtyuOn Grey’s Anatomy, Screen Actors Guild Award winner and Emmy nominee Chandra Wilson plays Dr. Miranda Bailey (aka “The Nazi”), a hardened surgeon who doesn’t take crap from anyone. (Although recently, her tough-as-nails exterior has been whittled down a bit thanks to the arrival of her son.) The real Chandra and the fictional Miranda share much in common — in particular, their lifestyles of juggling work and family. Chandra however, couldn’t be nicer. We caught up with her and her brood at the TCA Press Tour.

Both you and Dr. Bailey have your hands full, with a career and a family at home. What’s your secret?
You know, making it work. Like even tonight. This is a night where I know I’m going to be gone all day tomorrow, so if I’m not going to see [my son], even if I’m in the same room, because I’m getting dressed — we’ve worked all week long, we’ve had long days, and I needed to come do this today, and I said: “Okay. You guys get to ride with me today.” So, just like Dr. Bailey sometimes rolls up with the baby [laughs], you just make it work.

One of the most common observations about Grey’s Anatomy is its commitment to casting roles traditionally not held by women and/or people of color — your role in particular. Do you think this a sign that the industry’s coming around? What’s your experience been like?
It’s been kind of a different journey for me, coming out of New York, as opposed to really being here in LA, and going through the movie and studio circuit here in LA. This role came up, and she was non-traditionally cast, so that’s another place where I wasn’t necessarily affected by any preferences that are out there in the world right now, or in Hollywood. Grey’s is a multi-ethnic show [laughs], so that’s another place. I’m kind of living in the cocoon of all circumstances that prove that there’s nothing wrong. Once I step out of Grey’s, that’s when I can say, “Okay, wait a minute. We don’t have enough men and women of color,” or, “We need more men and women of color as show-runners.” But while I’m in Grey’s, I’m looking at it through those eyes.

Up until this point, few — if any — African American females were cast as doctors on TV, let alone surgeons. Do you get a sense that this resonates with viewers?
Yeah. Basically, what folks have is a deep appreciation for what they’re able to see on television. And I understand, from the outside looking in, how big that is. How big it is to see me playing Dr. Miranda Bailey. So, as many people that walk up to me and say, “Oh! You’re that nurse on that show!” [laughs] There are enough that really get that, no, it’s more than that, what [I'm] playing. And I know that that means something to somebody, to some little girl that’s sitting out there that wants to be something else — that never thought about, possibly, being a surgeon. And now, the idea is there. I get that.

Was there anyone in particular who inspired you along the way?
I grew up in Houston, so one of my biggest performing arts role models were the Allen sisters, with Debbie Allen and Phylicia Ayers. It was all about, “Yeah, I can dance at Joffrey if I want to,” you know what I mean? [laughs] Or, “I can go to ABT,” or, “I need to go to New York, and I need to do Broadway,” or, “I need to stay in school and graduate,” “I need to learn what producing is,” “I need to learn what directing is.” Because that’s the bar that they set for the possibilities in television and in performing arts for women of color, absolutely.

Do you miss New York?
Gosh. You know, I still consider that my home. I was there for almost 20 years. My stuff is still there. But, because I was from Houston, New York was just kind of the place where I went to school and where I worked. Just like LA is the place where I’m working right now. So, I’m not even really sure where home is. [laughs]

It’s where the children are.
[laughs] Exactly. We just make it, wherever we are.

Last question: What are your favorite TV shows?
Oh, gosh. Well, it’s hard for me to watch primetime, because I watch three and a half hours of soap operas every day. I watch everything on ABC, and The Young and the Restless. So, here in LA, I have to switch back and forth for about a half hour when The Young and the Restless and All My Children cross over. It’s a pain, but I make the switch during the commercials. I give myself one VHS tape to record it, I will not TiVo; otherwise I will never get through them all. It’s just too easy an out. So I give myself my one VHS tape to record them each day if I’m working, and I have to get through them that night because I need that tape for the next day. So, a lot of times, I’m up till two or three o’clock in the morning keeping track of my soaps [laughs], so I can use my tape the next day.

That’s impressive! Are you master of the VCR?
I’m doing my thing when I roll out at six o’clock in the morning. Sometimes I do PM when I’m supposed to do AM, and I miss a day, and then I have to catch up on SOAPnet that night. But, I have it set to record.
